This was the scene in Knowsley Road yesterday as flash flooding brought chaos to the borough yesterday.

The snap, showing residents desperately attempting to sweep water out of the road after the late afternoon deluge, was sent in by Reporter reader Tracy Doward.

Earlier, motorists were being urged to avoid a number of roads across St Helens because of flood related problems.

The following roads have been affected by flooding and related problems:

Peasley Cross Lane

Boundary Road

Southworth Road, Newton-le-Willows

A council spokesman said: “With heavy rain forecast to continue this evening, the section of Peasley Cross Lane under the railway bridge is set to be closed to traffic.

“Warning signs will be activated and the emergency services and bus operators alerted.

“Warning messages on nearby Variable Message Signs, advising drivers to use alternative routes are also being activated.”
