LAST month he was top of the class in Newton High School’s last ever GCSE results.
And now Michael Higgins, 16, has been awarded the prestigious John Vardy Award - as well as £200 towards the ongoing cost of his education.
Michael, now a student at Winstanley College, collected five A*s and three As at the end of his GCSE year, as well as all A*s in his ICT diploma.
He’s now studying towards A-Levels in maths, further maths, physics and computing.
The John Vardy Award is won by a final year high school student from Newton every year - based on their overall academic performance, as well as their contribution to school life and the community.
Michael said: “It’s a privilege to be picked by the school for this award. The money will be very useful!”
