A yob attacked a man in a taxi office after he refused to hand over food in his shopping bag.

The 45-year-old victim was waiting in A to B Taxis for a cab he had booked when another man walked into the office.

Police say the thug suddenly demanded the man hand over some food and when the victim refused he was punched several times in the face.

The savage attack - which took place on New Cross Street, near Cineworld in St Helens town centre - left the victim suffering from injuries to his mouth and eye.

Detectives have now released CCTV pictures of a man they want to speak to about the attack.

Insp Andy Johnston said: "This was a particularly nasty and unprovoked assault on a man who had been minding his own business waiting for a taxi.

“At the time of the incident, there would have been a number of people outside and around A to B Taxis who may have seen what happened or saw the men leaving the area.

“We are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen anything which in hindsight seems suspicious.

“We would also ask the man in the CCTV stills or anyone who knows of their identity to get in touch.”

Witnesses should call police on 0151 777 6813 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
