A FIVE-car pile up has brought the M6 to a standstill.

Traffic in Haydock and into St Helens has been affected after five cars were involved in a collision on the northbound carriageway at around 9am this morning.

North West Motorway Police tweeted that both the north and southbound carriages of the M6 between junction 20 and 21A, Woolston, would be closed for a short period while a air ambulance landed.

Cheshire Fire said that four cars had been involved in a collision and are advising people to avoid the area.
