Yates tipped for Tarzan movie
Film director David Yates.
COULD St Helens-born film director David Yates be about to swap wands for loincloths?
That’s the question being mulled over in Hollywood after the former St Helens College student emerged as the favourite to land one of the most hotly-contested jobs in tinseltown.
Warner Bros studio want to remake and update the original Tarzan films and see Yates as an ideal candidate.
And, in a surreal twist, Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps is being tipped to make his silver screen debut in the title role.
Neither Yates nor Phelps, whose haul of 22 medals is an Olympic record, have confirmed their interest in the project.
However, the swimmer would be following the footsteps of fellow Olympic swimmer Johnny Weissmuller, who played Tarzan in the 1940s.
If the project got off the ground it would represent one of the biggest jobs in Yates’ stellar career.
He grew up in Rainhill and studied at St Helens College, where he first developed his love of filmmaking.
Should he land the Tarzan job, he’ll be well-placed to coax novice actor Phelps through the rigours of shooting a Hollywood blockbuster.
“I like to create an atmosphere where actors feel safe enough to take risks,” he has said of his filming methods.
