ST Helens MP and former Northern Ireland secretary Shaun Woodward has hailed the meeting between Martin McGuinness and the Queen.

Mr Woodward said the meeting between her Majesty and the former IRA commander was a “major milestone”.

They shook hands yesterday during the Queen’s visit to the Northern Ireland.

McGuiness, now deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, was jailed in the 1970s for his involvement with the terrorist group.
