IT is one of the greatest tries ever scored in rugby league history.

Now Chris Joynt’s famous Wide to West try is set to be immortalised in song as part of a new choir project based around terrace chanting.

Written by the Citadel Arts Centre, the song ‘Wide To West’ is based on the famous events of the match in 2000 when St Helens were losing in the play-off with time up.

Never-say-die Saints kept the ball in play, with Sean Long eventually passing the ball out to centre Dwayne West, who found himself in space to feed Chris Joynt to score.

Long’s pass prompted commentator to Eddie Hemming (pictured) to utter the line, “It’s wide to West, it’s wide to West” as Joybnt crashed over the whitewash to send Saints fans into raptures.

A video for the song is being shot on the Knowsley Road site, Langtree Park and in a recording studio.

Organisers want men to get involved in a humourous recreation of the famous events for the video.

The song will be filmed on Wednesday, July 11 with a rehearsal on Monday, July 9 between 6pm and 8pm at the Springfield pub in Thatto Heath.

Sky commentator Hemmings has leant his voice to the cause of the project.

He said: “I’m humbled to have been part of such an iconic piece of rugby league history.

“I’m truly excited to see the music video premiere at the Saints v Warrington match, at which I will be commentating.”
