Turning over a new leaf on reading
PARENTS in Rainhill have been back to the classroom as part of new moves to help children get the most out of school life – literally!
The StART (St Ann’s Reading Together) project aimed to equip parents and grandparents with the skills and knowledge to help children enjoy reading and progress further, faster.
A group of parents and grandparents enjoyed six practical, two-hour sessions including ‘story-telling’, ‘how children learn to read’ and an introduction to ‘Letters and Sounds’. And they loved it.
“The course has been really enjoyable and informative” says course member Sue Rynn. “I feel sad that it’s over!
“Both Alison and Caren have been fantastic tutors, their knowledge and enthusiasm have been inspirational.”
St Ann’s headteacher, Rebecca Wilkinson, added: “Listening to your children read should be a wonderful experience, but if you’re unsure of what to do it can become a frustrating experience for everyone!
“This group of mums and nans now have the confidence to support their children’s reading effectively away from the classroom. It will help them come on in leaps and bounds at school.
“Children and their families are at the heart of what we are trying to achieve here at St Ann’s. I’d like to thank all the parents and grandparents involved in StART for their own interest and enthusiasm in what was a very enjoyable new project.”
The StART project was delivered by experienced consultancy team Caren Greaves and Alison Donnelly. Former class teachers and deputy heads themselves, the pair boast almost 50 years of experience between them, across several education authorities and a wide range of schools.
