THREE men have appeared in court following an incident in which a man was struck with a claw hammer.

Paul Middlehurst, Ryan Middlehurst and Peter Gornall, all of the YMCA on North Road, all stand accused of attempted GBH.

Paul Middlehurst, 31, has also been charged with assault and possession of an offensive weapon.

Police and emergency crews were called to the flats above the town centre Barclays Bank at about 12.15pm on Friday (October 12) following reports of a fracas.

On arrival at the scene, police found a 22-year-old man - Thomas Walsh - with injuries to his head and a young woman with bruising to her face.

Both were taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment.

The scene was cordoned off - at the junction of Church Street and Hardshaw Street - and an investigation into the incident launched.

Prosecutors say much of the fracas was captured on CCTV.

Paul Middlehurst, Ryan Middlehurst, 22, and Gornall, 32, were arrested a short time later near to the Natwest bank.

None of the trio were required to enter pleas before St Helens Magistrates’ Court on Monday (October 15).

They were remanded in custody to make their next appearance before Liverpool Crown Court on the morning of October 29.

Magistrates told the trio: “We’ve listened to the facts of the case and clearly the allegations are so serious they can only be dealt with by the crown court.

“In relation to bail, we believe the threshold has been passed for you to be remanded in custody.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Merseyside Police on 0151 777 6812.
