POIGNANT tributes have been paid to a Prescot councillor who has died aged 74 following a long illness.

Derek McEgan was first elected as a ward member for Prescot West in 1987, serving for 12 years on a range of council committees.

During that period, he was chairman of the health and environmental issues committee and then subsequently chairman of the leisure committee.

After a gap of 13 years, Coun McEgan was again elected as ward member in May 2012 – this time for Prescot East.

Following his re-election, Coun McEgan sat on a number of council committees.

He was also a key member of a working group looking at the provision of care and support offered to local people upon leaving hospital.

Coun McEgan was also a dedicated town councillor on Prescot Town Council where he served on the Human Resources Committee.

He is survived by his wife Margaret and three sons Michael, Paul and Mark.

Knowsley Council leader Ron Round, said: “It is so sad that Derek has passed away and our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family.

“Derek was an extremely committed and popular councillor who served the people of Prescot selflessly in two spells over a period of 25 years both as a borough and town councillor.

“He was a great champion for local people and made a huge contribution to the community. Derek will be greatly missed by us all.”

His funeral was held at Our Lady Immaculate and St Joseph’s Church in Vicarage Place, Prescot, on January 22.
