Traveller death not suicide

A CORONER said he could not be sure that a traveller from St Helens intended to take his own life.

Thomas Mongan, 27, was found hanged at his home on Telford Drive, Sutton, on December 23 last year.

But an inquest into his death heard there was insufficient evidence to indicate that he had intended to take his own life.

Coroner Christopher Sumner recorded an open verdict.

A large brawl was sparked when a fight erupted between rival gangs during an evening mass at Holy Cross Church – where prayers were being said for Mr Mongan – last month.

Shockingly, candlesticks were even used as weapons by the warring parties.

A police spokeswoman said around 40 men were involved in the melee but only two traded blows. Anyone with information can call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
