Town facing booze abuse crisis

THE true scale of the alcohol crisis facing health chiefs in St Helens can be revealed for the first time today.

Shocking figures released by the health group Alcohol Concern show the town has the worst record for alcohol-related hospital admissions per head of population in Merseyside.

Local NHS chiefs are left footing a bill equating to £74 for every person in the borough, while the human cost is even greater - 89 people suffered booze-related deaths last year.

Worried health chiefs and council bosses have created a joint task force offering services to help problem drinkers beat the booze. Coun Sue Murphy, cabinet member for Public Health, said: “Whilst much has been done to ensure that there is a robust treatment offer in place for people who need help, alcohol misuse remains a major source of harm in our local communities.

“Admissions to hospital for alcohol related harm remain unacceptably high and although admissions for males are historically higher than for females, the rate of female admissions is increasing.

“Change on a significant scale is needed to reduce harm and the impact on families.”
