CANCER care in St Helens is among the best in the country, according to a new report from a leading charity.

St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals were named in the top 10 of more than 160 trusts providing care and support for cancer patients.

The report by Macmillan Cancer Support was based on patient surveys.

The local trust achieved the highest score of all Trusts for two areas: staff explaining completely what would be done during tests, and patients feeling that hospital staff did not misinform them.

Other areas in which the Trust excelled include: patients feeling involved in decisions about their care, patients having confidence and trust in all doctors treating them, and patients feeling there were enough nurses on duty during their hospital stay.

Ann Marr, the trust’s chief executive, said: “It is extremely important that we provide the right care and support. We are committed to providing the highest standards to meet all patients’ needs.”
