Ten rescued after flooding
RESIDENTS in St Helens had to be rescued from their flooded homes by boat after the River Sankey burst its banks last night.
Torrential rain, which some experts believe has seen as much as a month’s rainfall in just 24 hours, led to the river overflowing and flooding Blackbrook Road and the junction with Westend Road.
Ten residents had to be taken to safety by firefighters using inflatable rafts just before 7.30pm yesterday, with two elderly women and a man and a couple of pets among those rescued. There were no injuries.
Further rainfall is still expected, and the Environment Agency has issued a flood warning for Rainford Brook, saying nearby properties could be “at risk”.
