A POPULAR supermarket has accepted a written warning after it was found to be selling out-of-date food.

Trading standards officers found mouldy pizzas, chicken and scotch eggs for sale at Aldi in Haydock.

The budget retailer was subsequently charged at St Helens Magistrates’ Court with 13 counts of selling food which was unfit for human consumption. Offences including selling out of date pork pies, rocket salad, sausage rolls and a topside of beef last year.

However, the action was dropped last week after Aldi admitted breaching safety rules and accepted a written warning from St Helens Council’s trading standards chiefs.

A spokesman for Aldi said: “On this occasion we have failed to meet our own very high expectations. We have conducted a thorough review of our processes to ensure this incident is not repeated.”

Aldi was named yesterday as one of the supermarket sold to be selling beefburgers containing low level of horse meat.
