Still going strong - couple celebrate 70 years together
When people point to negative statistics about the number of marriages that end in divorce, George and Marion Marsh just crack wry smiles.
That's because the inseparable couple have just marked their platinum jubilee wedding anniversary - the culmination of their 70th year of marriage.
Their incredible journey together began when they were married at Christ Church in Eccleston on August 5, 1939 - less than a month before the start of the Second World War.
George, now 94, the youngest of 11 children, is from a well-known St Helens family.
His grandfather, John Marsh, was landlord of the Sefton Arms pub and his father, also John Marsh, and his aunts ran the St Helens Mineral Water Company in North Road.
George attended Lowe House School and Lowe House Church.
Marion Marsh, nee Aspinall, now 89, hailed from Newtown and attended the old Knowsley Road School and Newtown Congregational Church.
As newlyweds, the couple moved to Balfour Street until George was conscripted to work in the aircraft industry near Chester for the duration of the war.
Both George and Marion worked for Pilks and Rubrey Owen Ltd in Warrington, George as a tool maker and Marion as a secretary.
In 1957 they emigrated to the USA and George worked in an oil tool equipment business in Houston, Texas, and Marion retrained as a hairdresser.
A US air force staff sergeant based at Burtonwood, who they had befriended during the Victory Europe celebrations in the St Helens Town Hall square in 1945, and with whom they formed a lifelong friendship, sponsored their immigration application.
They went on to spend many happy years in the USA before retiring to live in Hawthorn Drive, Mill Brow.
Ten years ago, the Marshes moved to Edinburgh to be near to their only daughter, Valerie and her husband, Reg Wilson - both former Cowley School pupils - and their three grandsons and four great grandchildren.
Unfortunately, due to failing health, George and Marion have recently moved into Struan Lodge Nursing Home in Edinburgh but would love to hear from any old friends, former work mates or neighbours.
