A GIFTED artist’s success in this year’s annual St Helens Open Art Competition was a real family affair.
Stephen Brown’s oil paint on linen portrait - entitled “Dad” - won acclaim from judges and earned him the lion’s share of the £2,000 prize pot.
Second prize went to Peter Drought with his black and white Langdale Pikes photograph, while Richard Stinton’s oil on canvas painting Sara Smile took third.
More than 150 artists submitted 240 artworks for the event, the best of which will now be showcased at an exhibition in the World of Glass - across all of the gallery spaces - until November 17.
The competition, organised by St Helens Council’s arts service, was open to all levels of ability, from amateur artists to art students and professionals, aged 16 upwards.
All art disciplines are represented, including ceramics, digital, drawing, glass, mixed media, painting, photography, needlework and sculpture.
Other category prize winners were: Laura E Quinn (portrait), Rita Jolley (landscape), Stephen A Douras (drawing), Gareth Jackson (digital), Barry Cooper (abstract) and Adrian Massey (olympics celebration).
Highly commended artists included Kerry Lisa Davies, George Drought, Alan Greenough, Carol Miller, Denise Dent, William Birchall, Genevieve Pennington and Keith Bentham.
