Where will you find the UK’s top Chinese restaurant? Perhaps in Manchester’s famed Chinatown or a swanky London postcode?

No to both. The answer, in fact, is a lot closer to home because lovers of Oriental cuisine should look no further than the Golden Horses right here in St Helens.

TripAdvisor revealed this week that the popular Park Road eatery had topped its national chart.

One reviewer said restaurant served up “absolutely outstanding food” and employed “very friendly and polite staff”.

The TripAdvisor list was compiled based on the average ratings and reviews provided by travellers to its website.

Golden Horses manager Martin Sung said: “We were really proud to be named the best in the UK - and surprised too. We’ve only been open for a couple of years but have put a lot of hard work into it and are glad that our customers have clearly noticed that.

“When I told my mum and dad about it they were just laughing. They couldn’t believe it. It’s not the sort of thing that happens every day!”

Amazingly, six of TripAdvisor’s top 10 Chinese restaurants were in the North West.

The Lady Jade in Liverpool placed second, Michael Wan’s Mandarin Cantonese in Blackpool third, Hoya’s Cantonese in Heywood fifth, Zen in Lytham St Annes eighth and Oriental Delight on the Wirral tenth. None of the top 10 were in London.

The TripAdvisor award made it an extra-special Chinese New Year for Martin and the Golden Horses staff last Friday (January 31).

Martin added: “I think we were rated so highly because all our staff are polite and focus on looking after the customers. We like to have a good relationship with our customers regardless of whether they are regulars or just visiting for the first time.

“We’ve come a long way in the last two years but the food we produce is always of a very good standard. We just want to carry on now and get even better hopefully.”
