ONE of the busiest roads in St Helens has been closed after a lorry carrying vegetable oil spilled its load.

Police warn the northbound carriageway of the St Helens Linkway will be closed for most of today while a clean-up operation takes place.

The spillage occurred close to the M62 junction seven yesterday afternoon.

Drivers are being diverted through Rainhill via Warrington Road, Rainhill Road and Eltonhead Road.

The southbound carriageway is open as normal.

A council spokesman said: “St Helens Council has adjusted the traffic lights to try and improve the flow around the Rainhill Stoops junction of the M62.

“Extensive clean up work is required but it is hoped that this will be completed later today (Thursday).”
