Blackbrook Rugby and Recreation Club awarded Olympic Legacy fund cash.

A LEADING amateur sports club has been awarded nearly £50,000 worth of Olympic legacy funding.

Blackbrook Rugby and Recreation Club secured a staggering £48,182, with a little bit of help from St Helens Council’s sports development team.

The cash, part of Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund, will enable the club to secure the lease on the football pitch and build fencing to improve playing facilities for the football section of the club.

In the past the pitch has been vandalised on countless occasions.

It will also allow the first team football to move to a higher league after finishing as Warrington Premier Champions.

Club treasurer Alan Swift said: “We are delighted. The grant will enable us to upgrade the quality of our football training and playing facilities for the children and adults of St Helens and the surrounding areas.

“On behalf of the Blackbrook Rugby and Recreation Club Committee we would like to thank Sport England, St Helens Council’s Sports Development Team, representatives of the Football Section and Blackbrook Royals Junior Rugby Section for helping us to gain this award.”

Dave Watts MP added: “This investment will be a fantastic sporting legacy for St Helens and this fund has really hit the mark with sports clubs in St Helens.

“It shows Sport England is offering the legacy that people want for their local community. For all the clubs that have secured funding, 2012 will be the year their local sports facilities got better.”
