CAMPAIGNERS have been given an 11th-hour lifeline in their bid to save Eccleston Social Club.

Developers Jones Homes say they are now willing to run the rule over the former Triplex club action group’s business plan - just five weeks before the club is set to close on November 16.

If given the green light, the blueprint could secure the future of the axe-threatened Knowsley Road venue both in the short and long term. Simon Thompson, spokesman for the Eccleston Social Club action group, welcomed the development.

He said: “We held a very meaningful meeting with Joseph Savage and Robert Gray - from Jones Homes - the outcome of which the action group is pleased with.

“We’re delighted that they are now engaging in meaningful discussions with us and look forward to ensuring a mutually satisfactory conclusion.

“We already have a business plan in place for the club and look forward to sharing it with Jones Homes and working with them to help secure the future of the club, both in the short and long term.”

The development comes just weeks after deputy council leader Barrie Grundewald publicly urged Jones Homes to re-consider their plan to shut the club.

A spokeswoman for Jones Homes said: “We have been in regular contact with the Eccleston Social Club action group in recent weeks and last Tuesday (October 9) held a fruitful meeting with members. The action group are to prepare a business plan regarding the future of Eccleston Social Club for Jones Homes’ consideration.

“In the last 12 months Jones Homes has made a major development investment in the borough and we are keen to take an active part in the St Helens community, particularly in Eccleston. We very much look forward to receiving the business plan from the action group.”
