Shopping for the independent way
Deputy council leader Barrie Grunewald (centre) with local independent traders
ST Helens celebrated independence day - by flying the flgag for small retailers.
The scheme was part of a national campaign that encouraged shoppers to buy at least one item from their local independent shop.
Organised by Skillsmart Retail and the National Skills Academy for Retail, the campaign aimed to champion the local retailers who make towns so special. And in St Helens, the council is doing all it can to help.
Deputy council leader Barrie Grunewald met many of the retailers to show his support as the local campaign got underway.
He said: “We’re already doing all we can to support all our town centre retailers – but recognise that independents play a vital role in making town and city centres special.
“Each one is unique, with local businesses responding to local needs and helping to shape the identity of each and every town. The high street would be much poorer place without them.”
A host of summer events have been lined up in the town centre.
