A SCOUT group which saw their old hut burnt down by arsonists will soon have the “final piece in the jigsaw” at their new base, thanks to a generous construction firm.

The 8th St Helens Scouts, based in Sutton, were devastated when their 40-year-old scout hut was burnt to the ground by firebugs in 2008.

But, after building new premises, they are now indebted to contractors Conlon Construction after they offered to build a second disabled access ramp for them - for free.

Scout leader Barbara Johnson, who revealed that the scout group’s apt new badge was a phoenix rising from the ashes, said: “We needed a 27ft ramp out of the back door onto the playing field and had started fund-raising because it would have cost us at least £5,000.

“But a chap from Conlon Construction, who had been working at Eaves Lane Primary School, asked the headmistress if there were any community projects they could help out with while they were in Sutton.

“It all sounded too good to be true at first, but they’ve started work on our ramp this week. Even now I keep pinching myself.”

She added: “It’s a wonderful gesture. We’ve got 90 kids on the books at the moment and they all think it’s absolutely lovely.”
