A TEENAGE schoolgirl was followed by this man before being indecently assaulted.

Police say a 14-year-old girl was walking along Harrison Way in Newton-le-Willows at about 3.30pm on December 14 when she became aware of a man walking behind her.

The man approached the girl and asked her for directions to Earlestown train station, which she gave before continuing on her way onto Sanderling Road and Whimbrel Avenue.

But the man continued to follow her and, as she approached an alley way, he put his hand up her skirt and made inappropriate comments.

The offender then ran down the alleyway and turned right onto Victoria Road in the direction of Wargrave Road.

Although uninjured, the girl was left shaken by the incident.

The offender is described as a white man aged 40-50, of a medium build. He had short, greying mousy brown hair.

He was unshaven with a pinkish face and was wearing rimless square glasses.

DC Chris Loughead said: “I would like to reassure parents and teachers that incidents like this are rare and we are taking it extremely seriously.

“I would urge anyone who witnessed this incident or anyone who recognises the man pictured to contact us.”

Anyone with information can contact police on 0151 777 6049 or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111.
