'Samaritan' turned into sex attacker

A ST Helens man who indecently assaulted a sex worker was last week jailed for three-and- a-half years.

Paul McNally, 43, of Cross Meadow Court pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting the mother of seven, who cannot be identified for legal reasons.

Liverpool Crown Court heard that McNally pretended to help the sex worker – who was being abused by a gang of youths – but then attacked her.

Judge Brian Lewis ordered McNally to sign the Sex Offenders' Register for life. And he told him: "This was a very serious incident indeed. It was a breach of trust because that woman was looking for sanctuary from a gang of youths and you effectively abducted her in your car.

"It is clear to me that there is a real and high risk of your re-offending and I must take steps to protect the public."

The court heard that McNally had previous convictions for indecent assault. He was jailed for nine months in 2002 for indecently assaulting a 15-year-old girl and he was convicted of indecently assaulting a woman in 1994.

Stuart Driver, prosecuting, said that on October 18, last year, the 32-year-old woman was standing on a road in Everton. A gang of youths were hurling abuse at her and when McNally's car stopped beside her, she asked him if he would drive her away from the trouble.

Mr Driver added: "She asked him to drop her off at a nearby pub but McNally kept on driving, ignoring her pleas for him to pull over."

McNally took the woman to Kirkby and stopped his car at a remote spot. "There, he sexually attacked her. He became aggressive and she was extremely frightened. She said she felt degraded and disgusted," said Mr Driver.

After the attack, McNally drove her to Norris Green and ordered his victim, to get out of his car. He was later arrested after DNA linked him to the offence and his victim picked him out of an identification parade.

Charles Lander, defending, said McNally wished to apologise to the victim for what he had put her through. He added: "This was a spontaneous attack."
