Hundreds of Saints fans endured a nightmare journey home after making the trip to watch the club’s Friday night game against Hull FC.

Many supporters spent up to four hour travelling home following Saints 19-12 defeat at the KC Stadium because of the closure of the westbound M62.

Highways bosses shut the section of motorway between junction 35 and 34 overnight to allow roadworks to take place.

But it meant fans leaving the game faced long delays getting home.

Many reported that the 113-mile journey, which normally takes around two hours, only came to an end in the small hours of the morning, with some taking to Twitter to voice their frustration.

Referring to the fictional village in the TV comedy League of Gentlemen, Paul Devanney wrote: “Hull was like Royston Vasey tonight, I thought I would never leave. Absolute nightmare journey. Worst diversion signage ever!”

Stuj added: “Journey back from broncos was 10 mins shorter!”
