Safety campaign in response to house fire
FIREFIGHTERS carried out a reassurance campaign at 300 homes in Newton-le-Willows following a serious house fire.
Ten fire appliances were deployed, along with 70 staff, last Friday (February 1) following a serious fire in the lounge of a house on Queens Drive a week earlier.
Fire crews were joined by representatives from Helena Housing, the council’s safer communities team and the St Helens Health Improvement Team.
They offered advice to residents on a number of issues, including electrical fire safety, heating safety and alcohol and drug awareness.
The fire service’s community safety manager, Mandy Longworth, said: “It is really important that residents are educated and supported in making their homes safe from fire.
“It is particularly important during the current cold weather that residents use extra heating methods safely.
“The partners who joined us in this campaign were also be able to offer additional advice and signpost people to available services to help in making our communities safer and stronger.”
In the Queens Drive blaze, a 46-year-old woman had to be rescued by fire crews after her lounge burst into flames shortly after 9.30pm on January 25.
The victim suffered burns and smoke inhalation and was taken to Whiston Hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, firefighter had to rescue a man after he became stuck in a lift at St Helens Central railway station.
Crews from St Helens Community Fire Station were called to the Shaw Street station shortly before 9.30am on Saturday (January 19).
The man was fortunately unharmed and was released by crews in just over half an hour.
