Road submerged in flash flood
Millfields in Eccleston
TORRENTIAL rain sparked a dramatic flash-flood on a busy St Helens road.
But residents of Millfields in Eccleston say this is the FOURTH time their street has ended up submerged in water in the last 12 months.
Persistent heavy downpours throughout Sunday (April 29) turned a large section of the road into a river of water.
The street, which links Knowsley Road and Church Lane, also had to be shut on January 3 this year following heavy overnight rain.
Resident Dave Price, who took these photos, has called on local councillors to start campaigning for a solution.
He said: “This is the fourth time in 12 months that flooding has happened along here. And the water is encroaching into properties and causing damage.
“Time and again we have asked for answers, only for time to pass and the situation to just be forgotten until next time.”
A spokesman for United Utilities said: “The torrential rain on Sunday saw the sewers and gullies on Millfields fill up with storm water and overflow. This lead to the flooding on the street.
“We have a great deal of sympathy with the residents who were affected and will be doing what we can to prevent it from happening again.
“There appears to have been a considerable build-up of silt in the underground pipes over time, due to the way the network is configured. A local dam, owned by a third party, appears to have contributed to the silt build up. We hope to start work later this week to clean the silt out of the pipes, in order to prevent future issues.
“We’ll be keeping local households informed of our progress.”
