Pupils hurt in CS gas attack
Rainford High Technology College
TWO children were hospitalised after a CS canister was discharged at a troubled St Helens secondary school.
Police and emergency crews were called to Rainford High Technology College after the weapon was sprayed on the school’s grounds last Thursday afternoon (May 24).
Ten pupils and three teachers had to be treated by paramedics.
Two of the children were taken to hospital “as a precaution” while the other 11 casualties were all treated at the scene.
Officers later arrested a 14-year-old boy from Billinge and a 15-year-old boy from Huyton on suspicion of possession of a section 5 firearm and assault. Both suspects were taken to a police station to be interviewed before being released on police bail pending further inquiries.
A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police confirmed: “Officers were called at around 2.40pm following reports that a CS canister had been discharged.
“Three teachers and eight students were treated by paramedics who attended the scene and two students were taken to hospital as a precaution and have since been released.”
A spokeswoman for St Helens Council simply said that the incident was “dealt with quickly” and that the matter was now in the hands of the police.
Education chiefs confirmed last month that Rainford High’s principal, Ruth Greenwood, and vice-principal, Sam Wells, had both resigned following a period of suspension due to falling exam standards.
The chair of governors also resigned shortly before Easter, citing “personal and health reasons”.
Since February, “super-head” Liz Nicholls has taken on the role of acting principal at the school.
Last week the school announced that Ian Young would take over as principal this September.
