MORE than half of St Helens pupils collected at least five GCSE passes last summer - including English and maths.

But school league tables released this week showed that there were marked differences between the performances of the borough’s schools.

Tower College, a private schools in Prescot was top of the pile, with 97 per cent of pupils achieving at least five A*-C grades - including English and maths - followed by Rainford High with 78 per cent.

Rainhill High and De La Salle were next, with 67 per cent and 63 per cent respectively, followed by Haydock High with 58 per cent - a leap of 18 per cent compared to 2011.

There were also record performances at St Augustine’s, up seven per cent, and Sutton Academy, up three per cent.

Bottom of the table was the Hope Academy, with just 43 per cent, and St Cuthbert’s, with 44 per cent.

Overall, 55.1 per cent of pupils achieved five GCSE passes including English and maths, slightly lower than the 55.7 per cent recrded the previous year.

More than 85 per cent of pupils also achieved at least five A*-C grades from all the subjects, eclipsing the national average.

St Helens Council’s director of children and young people’s services, Andy Dempsey, said: “It was another good year for the young people and schools of St Helens.”

At A-level, Rainford High recorded a 100 per cent record for the number of pupils getting three A*-E passes.

Carmel College was next on 96 per cent, with Cowley third on 88 per cent.

Coun Alison Bacon, the council’s cabinet member for children and young people’s services, said: “These are excellent results – against the background of an overall drop in grades across other parts of the country.”
