Police patrols on hospital ward for teen crash victim

Police were called to a hospital treating a St Helens teenager injured in a mystery crash - to protect staff and patients from visitors to his bedside.

Larry Maughan is still fighting for his life in Alder Hey after a suspected stolen van he was in ploughed into a lamppost on Reginald Road in Sutton.

Detectives are unsure whether the 13-year-old, who is from Sutton, was driving the vehicle when it crashed last Tuesday and are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 3pm and discovered the youngster suffering from horrific injuries.

Despite the seriousness of his condition, staff at the hospital have received numerous complaints concerning the unruly behaviour of those visiting him.

The number of complaints forced officers to launching patrol along wards at the children's hospital.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police and Alder Hey Children's hospital said: "The key priority at Alder Hey Children's Hospital is the care and safety of its patients, parents and staff. The needs of other visitors have to take a lower priority.

"Due to a number of complaints relating to the behaviour of certain visitors to the hospital, Alder Hey Children's Hospital and Merseyside

Police have agreed some temporary restrictions to visiting.

"These restrictions will ensure the hospital's staff can give their full attention to the needs of patients and parents. We have also got a police presence on the hospital's wards."

Officers are still carrying out checks on the vehicle - a blue flat-bed Ford transit van - but suspect it was stolen from Cheshire in February and was being driven on fake registration plates (NU53 ZPN).

House-to-house inquiries have taken place in the area and officers are carrying out examinations at the scene in a bid to establish the cause of the crash.

Anyone with information should contact Merseyside Police on 0151 777 5771.
