A pensioner sustained fatal injuries following a crash on the St Helens Linkway this afternoon.

The emergency services were called to the St Helens roundabout near the junction with Elton Head Road at about 2pm following a collision involving a car and a lorry.

The driver of the car - a Ford Zetec C max - was taken to Whiston Hospital, but sadly died a short time later.

A police spokesman said the man was believed to be 86 years old.

Collision investigators are now at the scene in a bid to establish exactly what happened.

As a result, the St Helens Linkway has been closed from the Micklehead roundabout heading towards St Helens. There are also restrictions at the Elton Head Road junction with the Linkway with a diversion in place down Sherdley Road.

Anyone who witnessed the collision can call the Roads Policing Unit via the police non-emergency 101 number or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111.
