A pedestrian was killed after he was struck by a car on the St Helens Linkway this morning (Tuesday, September 10).
Police were called to the A570 at 10.35am after a female motorist called to inform them that her Ford Fiesta had collided with a male pedestrian on the southbound carriageway.
Paramedics attended and pronounced the casualty, a local man in his 80s, dead at the scene.
Police officers are now in the process of notifying the man’s next of kin.
The driver of the Fiesta was uninjured but was treated for shock at the scene.
The southbound carriageway of the linkway was subsequently closed between the roundabout at the Micklehead pub and Chapel Lane and the northbound carriageway reduced to one lane while investigation work was carried out.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible, or follow the diversions that are in place.
