Saints historic 1932 season featured in an event at Langtree Park

HUNDREDS of visitors got a glimpse of the borough’s past during the Heritage Open Days.

Local landmarks including the Friends Meeting House, Gamble Building, Windleshaw Chantry and several churches were among the dozens of venues taking part in the annual nostalgia trip.

Langtree Park joined in the fun this year too – turning the clock back with a celebration of Saints’ historic first championship win in 1932 - a year in which they also won the Lancashire Cup.

There was a reading of Saints and rugby league-related poetry by Dave Dooley and a performance by the Singalonga Saints, who recently appeared on the pitch at Langtree Park.

The heritage celebrations got underway with grand tea dance in St Helens Town Hall - celebrating the music of the Victorian era. Dozens of people turned up to practice their ballroom, sequence and olde thyme routines.

And there’s more nostalgia to come, with a Classic Car Show in Church Square this Saturday.

The automotive extravaganza will include a replica of James Bond’s iconic Aston Martin DB5.

Marking events even later this month, St Helens town centre is bracing itself for Viking Day on Saturday, September 29 – a brand new event packed with themed entertainment including re-enactments, arts and crafts and street performances.
