A NEWTON man will appear in court this morning (Friday) charged with a notorious Manchester gangland murder linked to suspected police killer Dale Cregan.

Armed police are expected to form a huge security circle around Manchester City Magistrates before Leon Atkinson appears in the dock to hear charges he shot Mark Short and attempted to murder three other men at a pub in Tameside, Manchester, in May this year.

Mr Short, 23, was shot dead at the Cotton Tree Inn on Market Street after a gunman had entered and fired shots.

His father was later killed in a grenade attack at his home in Manchester.

Police arrested Cregan, 29, last month and charged him with the murder of father and son, as well as the killing of two female police officers in a gun and grenade attack.
