Newton beating Brazil and Australia in gold medal haul
Great Britain's Ed Clancy (left), Geraint Thomas (right), Steven Burke (second left) and Peter Kennaugh celebrate with their Gold medals in the Men's Team Pursuit Final
WHEN Olympic cyclists Geraint Thomas and Ed Clancy struck gold in the team pursuit this week it sent Newton-le-Willows ahead of 2016 Games holders Brazil in the medal table!
Amazingly, it also saw the township – which both Thomas and Clancy call home – edged alongside sports-mad Australia in the gold medal haul.
With a population of just 22,000, Newton is punching well above its weight too – with Clancy also claiming bronze in the multi-discipline Omnium event.
After all, Australia boasts a population of more than 22m people and Brazil a staggering 192m!
The Oscar-winning 1981 Olympic movie Chariots of Fire was famously also written by a son of Newton-le-Willows, Colin Welland.
