Mud rescue drama
A WOMAN had to be rescued by firefighters after becoming trapped waist-deep in a muddy brook.
Emergency crews were called to a brook behind the cemetery on Park Road South, Newton-le-Willows, shortly before 9.30am on Thursday (August 30).
It is believed that the stricken 59-year-old became stuck in the brook after going into the water to retrieve her dog.
A firefighter wearing water rescue equipment waded into the brook to rescue the woman, while another pulled her back to the safety of the bank.
The lady was checked over by paramedics at the scene before being taken to Warrington Hospital for treatment.
Watch manager Jason Hannah, who is based at St Helens Community Fire Station, said: “The lady’s right leg was stuck in mud and she was unable to release herself.
“A firefighter wearing water rescue equipment released her leg and pushed her out of the water. Another firefighter, who was on the bank and was wearing in water rescue equipment, assisted and pulled her.
“I would urge people to be cautious around water courses.”
Two fire appliances, from St Helens Community Fire station and Eccleston Community Fire Station, were on the scene within minutes of the call-out.
They remained at the scene for about half an hour.
