MP Woodward backs Miliband for top job
St Helens MP Shaun Woodward has nominated former foreign secretary David Miliband for the Labour Party leadership.
Fellow ex cabinet minister Mr Woodward described the older Miliband brother as a "towering figure" who could "immediately command not just the attention but also the respect of the party and the wider nation".
Mr Woodward said: "David has demonstrated an intuitive and empathetic grasp of the key issues facing our country. He is capable not just of uniting the Labour movement but also of winning back the hearts and minds we lost at the last General Election."
"He would clearly be a formidable challenger to David Cameron, providing a credible and principled alternative for the country and who, when the time comes, would serve our country well as Prime Minister."
Other candidates for the top Labour job include ex St Aelred's pupil Andy Burnham.
