FIREFIGHTERS had to rescue a stricken motorist from a notorious flood-spot following torrential downpours.

Crews were called to Peasley Cross Lane shortly before 3pm on Tuesday (August 21) after a passer by spotted a Citroen stranded in flood water up to its head lamps.

A firefighter wearing water rescue equipment helped the 45-year-old woman onto the roof of her car, before completing the rescue via an inflatable raft.

She was checked by paramedics, but was unharmed.

St Helens Fire Station watch manager Jason Hannah said: “The firefighter opened the car door and supported her onto the roof. The water level was just below the window line when we arrived but then continued to rise.

“All firefighters are trained in still water rescue for situations such as this, but the lady thanked us for helping her.”

Appliances from Eccleston and Croxteth also attended the call-out.
