A TEENAGER has admitted slapping a young girl in the face as she pushed a baby in a pram.

Dean Stanley, 18, pleaded guilty to an assault on the 16-year-old victim before St Helens Magistrates’ Court last Friday (March 15).

Angela Blackmore, prosecuting, told how the defendant denied punching his victim but accepted that he had hit her in the face with a “full force blow”.

The incident was also witnessed by a receptionist at the St Helens Salvation Army hostel, where Stanley currently resides, who told how the defendant also appeared to spit at the girl. The assault left Stanley’s victim suffering from swelling and reddening to her lip.

Chris Maloney, defending Stanley, accepted that the probation service would have to compile a pre-sentence report. He added that this was his client’s first conviction for violence. District Judge Wendy Lloyd warned Stanley that, despite his guilty plea, he could still face jail.

She said: “I’m not making any promises. This was a deliberate, forceful blow – delivered in front of a child in a pushchair – and the victim is a vulnerable 16-year-old. I can’t rule out custody. To hit someone, particularly a woman, when there’s a baby there is serious stuff. Nobody knows where it is going to end.”

Stanley was released on conditional bail and is due to be sentenced before St Helens Magistrates’ Court on April 9.
