An alcoholic from St Helens died after breaking his neck falling down the stairs.

John Pennington was pronounced dead by paramedics at his home address on Elephant Lane, Thatto Heath, shortly before 2pm on February 28.

An inquest at St Helens Town Hall heard that the 60-year-old had a history of alcoholism, epilepsy and depression and had previously suffered from memory loss.

The court heard how, two days before he died, Mr Pennington had agreed to collect some belongings from his partner Yvonne Lee’s address.

But when she was unable to contact him, Ms Lee contacted police. When officers forced their way into his home his body face down at the foot of the staircase.

Pathologist Dr David Barker found Mr Pennington had suffered a broken spine and was three times the drink drive limit when he died.

Coroner Christopher Sumner recorded a verdict of accidental death.
