Man dies in house blaze
A MAN has died after a blaze at a bungalow in Newton-le-Willows.
The fire is believed by firefighters to have started at around 9pm on Wednesday evening (July 11).
Crews from Newton rushed to the scene in Rob Lane and rescued two men from the property.
A first man, believed to be in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
A second, elderly man, was treated for smoke inhalation and was taken to Warrington Hospital for further treatment.
Firefighters investigating the cause of the blaze believe it started in a rear bedroom of the property.
Newton station manager Steve Pratt said “Firefighters were on scene within minutes and heard smoke alarms sounding from inside the property.
“Neighbours had tried to break a lounge window to allow smoke out of the bungalow.
“Firefighters entered the property and rescued an elderly man. They also brought another man out of the property. Unfortunately he was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.”
Crews have since cleared and vetillated the property and remained at the scene for around two hours.
Investigating fire officers believe cause of the fire was accidental.
Around 90% of the bedroom was severely damaged by fire. There was also moderate smoke damage to around half of each of the six other rooms in the property.
Crews from Newton, St Helens and Eccleston as well as a Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service command unit attended the incident.
