Man arrested over pensioner's death
A man has been arrested by police over the death of pensioner Margaret Briers.
The arrest, which was on Friday, followed a renewed appeal for information about the case on last week's Crimewatch programme.
The 24-year-old was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter during a series of drugs raids in the borough. He has since been released on police bail.
Mrs Briers was attacked by a man in her bungalow on Caldbeck Grove, Carr Mill, Billinge, on Sunday March 30.
He told the 82-year-old that he was a police officer and said that an intruder was in her back yard.
Once inside he shoved the pensioner, also known as Peggy, to the floor before taking money and fleeing.
Mrs Briers, a great-grandmother of 24 and grandmother of 15, broke her hip during the incident and was left lying in agony for 12 hours after the attacker ripped an emergency alarm from her neck.
The attacker fled with a cash tin, which contained just 16.
Mrs Briers later got a chest infection and died in hospital, leading to police launching a manslaughter inquiry.
Crimestoppers are offering a 5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction remains in place.
Witnesses or anyone with information can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or the police incident room on 0151 777 1595 or 1590.
