The St Helens Reporter today launches a campaign to create a Johnny Vegas-inspired architectural gem in our town.
Our ‘Let Johnny Build St Helens’ campaign follows comments the Thatto Heath funnyman made during a trip to Barcelona.
Inspired by the work of Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi, Johnny tweeted St Helens mayor Andy Bowden asking for permission to create his own modernist-style masterpiece in his hometown.
Flush from the success of his autobiography Becoming Johnny Vegas, he has even pledged to fund the project out of his own, well-lined pockets.
Gaudi is famed for his modernist work in and around Barcelona, including the Sagrada Familia church.
We believe the comic’s success and subsequent commitment to his hometown should be marked, not by a plaque or statue, but by allowing Johnny himself to shape a work of art for the town.
Johnny is no slouch as an artist. He studied ceramics at university and has even had pottery he created on-stage exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
What better and more suitable way to honour one of the town’s most famous sons?
Johnny is backing the campaign, tweeting his support: “C’mon, lets build something inspired for art and culture’s sake #goodforthesoul and won’t cost folk a penny.”
The campaign is simple enough. We are calling on St Helens Council to give Johnny permission to create a piece of public art work for the whole town to enjoy.
Ideally, the location should be somewhere in the town centre, where the most people can view Johnny’s masterpiece, but we are keen to hear suggestions on where they think it should go.
The art itself is entirely up to Johnny himself. No pressure, Johnny!
How can you support our campaign?
It’s simple. We’ve mocked up a front page which we have tweeted from our Twitter account @StHelensReport. Simply retweet the image with a message of support.
We’d love it if you can show your support by leaving comments at the bottom of this story.
We’ll have more details about our campaign and a progress report in Wednesday’s edition of the St Helens Reporter. Can you also vote to support the campaign. And we’ll publish the results in Wednesday’s paper.
Until then, get tweeting, and get supporting, and #letjohnnybuildsthelens
