ONE of St Helen’ longest serving members is retiring after 25 years.

Leon McGuire, 82, who represents the Earlestown ward, has been a councillor for 25 years.

Born in India, where his father was in the forces, he lived abroad for 10 years but, when war broke out, returned to the UK and went to school in Edinburgh where his father was stationed.

On leaving school at 14 he went to work for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) at the city’s Haymarket station.

Leon (pictured) joined the Royal Artillery Boys Battery when he was 15. He was in the forces for 27 years and saw active service in Palestine, Korea and Cyprus.

After rising through the ranks to become Battery Sergeant Major Leon left the forces and settled down in Newton le Willows. He married local girl Margaret Thomas in 1955 and had four sons.

Leon joined the civil service working for the DHSS for 20 years. He was first elected to the council in 1987 representing the Moss Bank ward and later Newton and Earlestown wards.

Councillor McGuire said: “After serving as a soldier for 27 years, 20 years in the civil service and a councillor for 25 years I feel it is time to give way to the younger generation.

“I would like to thanks the people of Moss Bank, Newton le Willows and Earlestown for their trust and support over the past 25 years.”
