MEET Thomas Bartley - St Helens’ oldest apprentice!

He recently completed a course at St Helens College in health and social care at the age of 64.

And he has just secured a apprenticeship with Wendy Jones Community Care Personal Assistance as a support worker for people with learning disabilities.

The former lorry driver said: “When I left school at 16 I went straight into work, so returning to education after so long was a daunting prospect.

“The teaching staff at St Helens College are fantastic and make you feel welcome and relaxed. I had continuous contact with my assessor who was always available when I required support.”

Mr Bartley, from Leigh, added: “I believe that by successfully completing the apprenticeship programme, I have gained valuable qualifications and knowledge to help me in my job.

“It really is never too late to learn and I am proud of my achievement. Hopefully I can inspire others.”
