A VETERAN parishioner has compiled a calendar of old photographs to help mark the 175th anniversary of the oldest church in St Helens.

Gordon Crosby, 84, first visited Christ Church in Eccleston as a baby and has been attending - rain or shine - ever since.

So he was the perfect candidate to pull together a dozen fascinating photos of yesteryear for the church’s 2013 Roots and Reflections calendar.

Gordon said: “All the photos show places which no longer exist - so it’s something of a souvenir calendar. I collected them from various older people around here before sifting through and picking 12 out. I’ve enjoyed the process immensely and I’m thrilled with the end result.

“My personal favourite is probably the photo of the old Post Office, which we’ve used for March. In those days the Post Office was a hive of village activity - everybody used to shop there.

“There are also photos of the old school in Chapel Lane and one of the church taken from the vicarage garden, which shows rhodedendrons that the vicar had brought back from the Himalayas!”

Roots and Reflections is on sale now at the Tyrers department store and in church every Sunday, priced £5 each.

All proceeds will be donated to Christ Church’s building and renovation fund.

To mark the church’s 175th anniversary, a series of special community events have also been planned for 2013 - including a concert by the internationally renowned Black Dyke Band at St Helens Town Hall in the spring.
