Garage staff targeted in armed raid

The Euro Garage on Upholland Road, Billinge

The Euro Garage on Upholland Road, Billinge

ROBBERS threatened a terrified cashier with a crowbar before trapping him in a toilet and looting a St Helens garage.

Three masked thugs approached the desk at the Euro Garage in Billinge shortly before 9pm last Tuesday (July 31).

One of the men then threatened the cashier with a crowbar and demanded money. Another of the trio brandished a baseball bat.

Fearing for his safety, the staff member backed off into a nearby toilet but one of the men forced the door shut so he could not get out.

They then stole cash and cigarettes before driving off towards Orrell in a black Seat Leon.

A fourth person remained outside in the getaway vehicle throughout the robbery.

One of the men is described as white, 5ft 7ins tall and of slim build. He was wearing dark clothing, had his face covered and was carrying a baseball bat.

The man who wielded the crowbar is described as white and was wearing a baseball cap. He too had his face covered.

DC Debbie Pennington said: “We are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the robbery or who saw anything suspicious to contact police.

“We believe the car was a Seat Leon with an ’09 reg. If you saw a car similar to this parked at the garage or speeding away at the time of the robbery, I would urge you to call us.”

It’s not the first time robbers have targeted the Upholland Road petrol station in the last 12 months either.

At the end of December, a gang of three men manhandled a cashier before stashing money and cigarettes into a duvet cover - while another man acted as lookout at the door.

Anyone with information about the latest robbery can call police on 0161 856 7251 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111.
