Fury as woodland is ripped down by railway developers

RESIDENTS are furious that woodland near to their Meadowcroft homes is being pulled down.

Network Rail is clearing vegetation and trees near to the railway line, some of which have stood there for more than 30 years. The rail company did not consult residents because it is not policy.

Anne Jones who lives on Meadowcroft, said: "We are very angry at the way this matter has been dealt with.

"Letters informing us about the work arrived on Friday afternoon, giving us only 30 hours notice before work started.

"A lot of people on the street are upset by this news.

"One lady whose house backs onto the embankment is worried about subsidence because the work involves uprooting a number of large oak trees."

Jackie Rigby has five grandchildren and she is concerned about safety because the embankment leading to the railway line is not adequately fenced off.

"We understand that there is an issue of safety for rail workers and train passengers but the fence which was erected 25 years ago has never been maintained," said Jackie.

She added: "The mature woodland provides a deterrent to children looking to get on the railway line.

"When trees are cleared, the line will be in full view and curious youngsters will be tempted to venture into a danger area."

A spokesman for Network Rail said: "We do apologise for the late delivery of the notification letters, we would normally aim to give residents several days notice of work to be done near to their homes.

"Company policy is to clear trees and undergrowth to a six metre distance from the line for safety reasons.

"Some branches were obstructing the drivers' view of signals and leaves on the line is a serious problem. Network Rail is not there for aesthetic value instead our aim is to ensure the safety of our passengers and employees.

"Anyone who has any issues with the railways can telephone the national helpline on 08457 114141."
