THE quirky charm of Covent Garden is set to come to St Helens on June 9 - in the shape of the Street Performers Roadshow.

Among the UK’s best street performers, the troupe are currently on a tour of the country which will see them take in London during the Olympics and Scotland for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The Covent Garden team includes an escape artist, a juggler who juggles knives balancing on a ladder, a man who can fit his whole body through a tennis racquet while riding a seven-foot unicycle and two giant ladybirds!

Rob Roy Collins, who will be performing his signature handcuff and chain escape, said: “We’re really excited about this tour. We all perform in Covent Garden in London and around the world and we love performing to new audiences in towns and cities like St Helens.”

During the day, there will be a limited number of pitches for local artists to bring their talents to the streets alongside the Covent Garden performers.

The council hopes to use the event as a launchpad and create the town’s own ‘Buskers Festival’ in years to come.

Barrie Grunewald, the deputy leader of St Helens Council, said: “This will be an absolutely fantastic event - and one which I’m sure will bring many people into the town centre.

“It’s also a great opportunity to launch our new busking licence scheme – with some of Britain’s brightest talent here in St Helens.”

Performances on June 9 will run from 11am to 4pm.

All spaces must be applied and auditioned for, either in person or via an audio or video clip such as YouTube, Soundcloud or Facebook.

If you are interested in booking a space at the festival, e-mail: stephennanders@sthelens.gov.uk outlining your act and your requirements.

Alternatively, you can apply in writing to: St Helens Council, Strategic Events Team, 3rd Floor, Wesley House, Corporation Street, St Helens.
